Trump this. A lesson for marketers, and your career.

By Bob Rose, President

How often does something really incredible happen? Probably more often than we acknowledge -- but before it’s over (and it will be soon), stop and appreciate this.

The rise of Donald Trump as a political candidate is truly amazing.

His policies are ill-defined, and he doesn’t seem to have a handle on too many facts. Hearing him speak is a struggle for those of us who cling to the concept of a coherent thought.

Yet his command of attention is staggering. Yesterday he spoke at a rally in front of 10,000 people in Arkansas. Other leading candidates are happy with crowds that are a tenth of that size. (BTW, He was two hours late and no one left. When he got there, the place went nuts.)

With The Donald in the debates, the viewership has been historic. The ratings for debates with the Trumpster are among the highest not just for political programming, but for any kind of program ever on cable TV.

Excuse me a moment while I self-servingly do a little trick to help the algorithms increase the readership of my post. Unless you are a search spider, please skip to the next paragraph.

TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP.TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP!!!

So, what can we, as marketing and communication professionals, glean from the (again, truly) amazing Trump phenomenon.

Here’s what I think: People have a lot of information in their brains these days. We love the chance to break out the tedium of our fact-based lives.

We truly value things that are un-expected. Things that entertain. And, we like things that have an element of insanity in them.

How else can you explain that Gangnam Style is still, by far, the most widely viewed video in YouTube history?

So when the candidate Donald says something insulting, irritating or just plain nuts – Boom, he has our attention.

So on your next important business meeting, or big job interview, remember: Add just a little crazy. You know, to get their attention.

But not too much. We’ve proven Donald can get our attention, but getting our vote is another story. After all, we haven’t lost our minds.
